The Willcox and Benson Chambers: What a New Landowner Actually Gets

What the Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture and the Benson Chamber publish, which trades are and are not in their directories, and how to find a contractor.
Buy land in the valley from out of state and the first advice you get is "call the chamber of commerce." It is not bad advice. It is incomplete, because the two chambers that cover the Sulphur Springs Valley and the San Pedro side are small, volunteer-heavy organisations whose directories list who paid dues, not who is good, and not every trade you need is in them.
This post is what each chamber actually publishes as of autumn 2026, read directly from its own site, so you know what to expect before you spend a morning on it.
The Willcox chamber is at willcoxchamberofcommerce.com. The shorter willcoxchamber.com is not the chamber; when we checked it, it was a payday-loan site with no connection to Willcox. The Benson chamber is at bensonchamber.com. Do not hand either your details through the wrong one.
Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture
The full name matters. This is a chamber of commerce and agriculture, in a town whose economy is farming, ranching, wine and rail, and the directory reflects it. Contact details published on the site: P.O. Box 32, Willcox, AZ 85644; 520-614-6032; info@willcoxchamberofcommerce.com.
The directory. It lives on the home page, as a single alphabetical table of roughly 88 entries with a name, sometimes a phone number, and usually a link to the member's own site or social page. There are no categories. Individuals who have joined as members are listed by name alongside businesses, so you will scroll past people to find companies. The chamber states plainly that it does "not endorse or rate individual businesses." Take that at face value: a listing is a membership, nothing more.
What a landowner will find in it. Reading the table in October 2026, the entries most relevant to someone developing a parcel were:
- Utilities: Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Coop (SSVEC), (520) 384-2221; Valley Telecom Group, (520) 384-2231; Arizona G&T Cooperatives, (520) 586-3631; Open Loop Energy, (928) 348-9200.
- Materials: Willcox Rock & Sand, (520) 384-2181; Klump Materials, (520) 384-2000; Geronimo Steel, 520-384-2000.
- Pumps and equipment: Simmons Pump & Supply, (520) 384-2273; Stotz Equipment-Arizona Machinery Co., (520) 766-0610.
- Real estate, title, banking, insurance: two realty offices, a title agency, a bank, a credit union and two insurance agencies.
- Waste: Southwest Disposal, (520) 384-0765.
What is not in it. No well driller. No excavation or grading contractor. No electrician, plumber, septic installer or fencing contractor appears under any recognisable name. That is not a criticism of the chamber; it is the membership as it stands. It means the Willcox directory is a good way to find your power co-op, your gravel and your pump supplier, and a poor way to find the people who will dig.
Events. The site lists an annual meeting in December at the Elks Lodge, ribbon cuttings, Wings Over Willcox and the Willcox West Fest Ranch Rodeo and Chuck Wagon Cook-Off. The Services page on the site was placeholder text when we read it, and dues are behind an application form that does not publish tiers, so we cannot tell you what membership costs or includes beyond the site's own line about "exclusive resources, events, and community support."
Benson Chamber
The Benson Chamber is run differently. Its site describes it as "a project of Southeast Arizona Economic Development Group (SAEDG) in partnership with City of Benson and community sponsors." SAEDG is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit. Contact details published: 168 East 4th Street, Benson, AZ 85602; (520) 265-6058. Benson is on the San Pedro, not in our valley, but it is the nearest service town for Dragoon, Cochise and the west side of the Willcox Playa, and its directory is the one with a trades category.
The directory is categorised, and the categories tell you what it is built for. The ones a landowner will use:
- "Appliance repair, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, septic, portables & well drilling"
- "Construction, roofing, landscaping, driveways, decks & fencing"
- "Real estate and rental & leasing (including self storage & equipment rental)"
- "Agriculture, aviation, rail, utilities, mining & manufacturing"
Unlike Willcox, the structure at least has a place for drillers and septic installers to appear. We could not read the individual listings from the category index page, so we are not naming who is in each category here; open the category and read it yourself. The directory is open to submissions, so it will change.
Business resources. This is where the Benson site is genuinely useful to someone starting a rural business on their land. It links the Cochise College Small Business Development Center for one-on-one counselling on planning, licensing and start-up, ARIZONA@WORK for hiring, the Arizona Commerce Authority's small-business checklist, the Department of Revenue for transaction privilege tax, the Corporation Commission for forming an LLC, and the County Treasurer for property tax. It also lists SSVEC as the electric provider and names the local banks and credit unions.
Events published for the coming season include Amerind Autumn Fest at the Amerind Museum in Dragoon, Old Fashioned Christmas and the Festival of Lights in Benson, and the Texas Canyon Mountain Bike Race. The chamber also hosts a network luncheon with SAEDG at the Cochise College Benson Center.
How to actually find a contractor through a chamber
The directories are a starting list, not a vetting service. Neither chamber claims otherwise. Use them like this:
- Pull the names from the relevant Benson category and from the Willcox table. Expect the Willcox table to give you suppliers and the Benson categories to give you trades.
- Check the licence before you call. Any paid work at $1,000 or more, or any work that needs a county permit at any price, requires a Registrar of Contractors licence under A.R.S. § 32-1121. Ask for the ROC number and check it at azroc.my.site.com. A chamber listing is not a licence.
- Ask the supplier, not the directory. The counter at a pump house, a gravel yard or an equipment dealer talks to every contractor in the valley every week. Who they see buying material for jobs like yours is better information than any list.
- Ask SSVEC. If your parcel needs a line extension, the co-op's new-service process will involve trenching and conduit, and its staff know which contractors have done it to their standard.
SSVEC and the other member utilities
Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative appears in both chambers' material, and for good reason. Its own site describes it as "a not for profit, member-owned distribution cooperative" serving parts of Cochise, Graham, Pima and Santa Cruz counties, with "more than 60,000 services over some 4,100 miles of energized line," and names Willcox, Bowie, San Simon, Elfrida and Pearce-Sunsites among the communities it serves. If you take power from SSVEC you are a member, with a vote, not merely a customer. Valley Telecom Group is listed alongside it as a utility; our broadband post covers what internet options actually reach a given parcel.
What we could not confirm
- Willcox chamber membership dues or tiers. The application form requires a tier but does not display the options, and the pricing page was not readable to us.
- Which businesses are inside each Benson directory category. The index page we could read lists categories only.
- Whether either chamber offers a formal referral or relocation service. Neither site describes one.
- Whether the Willcox directory count of roughly 88 entries is stable. It is a live page and will have changed by the time you read it.
- Nothing here is a recommendation of any listed business. We read names and phone numbers off public pages; we did not call them.
The short version
The Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture (willcoxchamberofcommerce.com, not willcoxchamber.com) publishes an uncategorised alphabetical directory of about 88 members that is strong on utilities, materials and pump supply and contains no driller, excavator or electrician. The Benson Chamber, a project of SAEDG, publishes a categorised directory with a trades category that can hold drillers and septic installers, plus a useful business-resources page. Both say or imply they do not vet members. Use them to build a list, verify every name at azroc.my.site.com, and ask the supply counters who they see doing the work.
Tell us the parcel and the job and a licensed local contractor will call you to quote it.
Need this done on your parcel?
Tell us the parcel and the job. An independent, ROC-licensed Cochise County contractor who works the valley will call you to quote it — usually within one business day. Not a licensed contractor. Quotes come from independent, ROC-licensed Cochise County contractors.
